But Honda specializes in innovation and in the 16YM model it presented a completely new concept, totally innovative: the X-*ADV.<\/p>\n<p>What were the thought processes that led to its creation? We consider the characteristics of the average adventurous style motorcycle: a robust attractiveness for walking anywhere, a raised riding position that provides excellent visibility and a surprising overall utility, whether for work or entertainment. Then let&#8217;s take a look at the typical urban motorcyclist: it could be a scooter or a motorcycle, but either way, it will be easy to handle, agile and loaded with convenience, efficiency and useful storage space. The Honda engineers, always ahead in their thinking, combined all two elements and something special happened.<\/p>\n<p>The machine that they created had an image of a rugged and elegant SUV, completely comfortable for navigating the urban jungle. And while it was loaded with all the *premium features that make life in the big city easier, it also had the looks, engine power and xassis capability to inject every journey with the promise of adventure.<\/p>\n<p>The X-*ADV captured the essence of two-wheel freedom in an exciting way and attracted the attention of an army of motorcyclists all over Europe, hungry for something new, and proved to be a real sales success. And, demonstrating its off-road credentials, in the hands of the experienced Italian racer Renato Zocchi, a lightly modified version took victory in Class 2 at the exhausting 2019 Gibraltar Rally of Gibraltar, with a 7,000 km course.<\/p>\n<p>And it hasn&#8217;t been stagnant. In the 21YM model, Honda improved the performance of the X-*ADV engine, reduced the weight, improved the styling and added even more utility.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the X-*ADV will be Honda&#8217;s third best-selling motorcycle over *350cc and since its introduction into the range, almost 60,000 units have been sold across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>With the introduction of two Special Editions and a new color option for the 24YM model, the X-*ADV continues to consolidate its position as one of the coolest and most desirable two-wheelers available in Europe today.<\/p>\n<h2>Model summary<\/h2>\n<p>The parallel-twin engine combines strong performance in the low and mid-range with smooth behavior and excellent fuel efficiency. Maximum power is set at 43.1 kW with an impressive 69 *Nm of torque. Throttle-by-wire (*TBW) control offers 4 preset driving modes and a customizable USER option, while Honda Selectable Stall Control (*HSTC) offers refined input at 3 levels. The Dual Clutch Transmission (*DCT) has automatic shift programs that integrate with driving styles, as well as USER input.<\/p>\n<p>A rugged xassis is composed of a tubular steel frame, 41 mm *USD front forks, a *monoshock rear shock absorber (with Pro-Link) and an aluminum swingarm. A 17-pole front wheel is combined with a 15-pole rear wheel with radial-mount four-piston caliper brakes.<\/p>\n<p>The bodywork has a sleek and aggressive design; the LED headlights also have daytime running lights (*DRL), like those used on the CRF1100L *Africa *Twin, improving visibility to other road users. For an easy access to the saddle, the seat is securely contoured on the back. The storage space under the seat has a volume of 22 liters and also houses a USB-C charging point; there is also a useful object holder compartment. Its relatively long stroke architecture and specially shaped combustion chambers, together with the high-inertia crankshaft, produce large amounts of torque effortlessly from the lowest rpm. A forward tilt lowers the center of gravity for optimum stability.<\/p>\n<p>Maximum power is set at 43.1 kW at 6,750 rpm, with a maximum torque of 69 *Nm at 4,750 rpm. From 30 km\/h, the X-*ADV will cover 20 meters in 1.7 seconds, 50 meters in 3.2 seconds, while at 60 km\/h, the torquey engine turns at only 2,500 rpm.<\/p>\n<p>For A2 license holders, a 35 kW version is available, which can be easily converted to the full-power version by a Honda dealer at the appropriate time. Similarly, it is possible to limit the full-power version to 35 kW by having the ECU remapped by a Honda dealer.<\/p>\n<p>The two balancers counteract the vibration generated by inertia at higher rpm without affecting the distinct &#8220;pols&#8221; provided by the irregular engine torque order and the 270\u00b0 crankshaft phasing. Cylinder dimensions are 77 x 80 mm. If possible, the components are manufactured to perform more than one function: the drive shaft drives the water pump, while one of the balance shaft drives the oil pump.<\/p>\n<p>By keeping the number of fish to a minimum in this way, the engine is kept light, efficient and reliable.<\/p>\n<p>The X-*ADV engine is also fuel efficient, with a measured fuel consumption of 27.8 km\/l (*WMTC), which provides a potential range of 366 km with a fuel consumption of 13.2 liters.<\/p>\n<h3>3.2 Motor electronics<\/h3>\n<p>The throttle-by-wire control offers 4 preset driving modes, plus USER customization Honda&#8217;s Selectable Torque Control has 3 levels of intervention With the *TBW managing engine performance and response, there are 4 ways for the driver to choose from, covering all driving conditions. The selection of the mode is managed by means of the left switch on the handlebar.<\/p>\n<p>The STANDARD mode offers a balanced intermediate point between engine power delivery, engine braking and *HSTC intervention, with the highest level of ABS intervention.<\/p>\n<p>The SPORT mode provides a more aggressive engine power delivery and engine braking, with low *HSTC intervention and high ABS.<\/p>\n<p>The PLUJA way transmits a low engine power delivery and engine braking, with high *HSTC and ABS input.<\/p>\n<p>The GRAVA way combines high power and engine braking with low *HSTC and ABS.<\/p>\n<p>The USER mode offers customized low\/half\/half\/high options between engine power delivery and engine braking, and low\/half\/half\/high\/off for *HSTC.<\/p>\n<p>The Honda Selectable Torque Control (*HSTC) offers refined control, as it uses the *TBW to manage the torque delivered to the rear wheel, with 3 levels of intervention:<\/p>\n<p>Level 1 allows minimal intervention for a certain flattening of the rear wheel, as in gravel or earth, and its level of intervention is reduced compared to the previous design.<\/p>\n<p>Level 2 is the default setting and provides traction that inspires confidence in general driving conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Level 3 provides maximum control on rough roads.<\/p>\n<p>The *HSTC can also be turned off.<\/p>\n<h3>3.3 Double Clutch Transmission (*DCT)<\/h3>\n<p>Different shift programs are linked to driving styles The USER mode allows a choice of 4 settings, from smooth to aggressive Honda&#8217;s *DCT technology has been in production for 14 years and more than 230,000 units of Honda two-wheelers equipped with *DCT have been sold in Europe since 2010. It offers consistent and smooth shifting up or down and quickly becomes second nature in use. It uses two clutches: one for the start and 1st, 3rd and 5th gear, and one for the 2nd, 4th and 6th gear, with the main axis of each clutch located inside the other for compact packing.<\/p>\n<p>Each clutch is independently controlled by its own electrohydraulic circuit. When a gear change occurs, the system preselects the target gear using the clutch that is not currently in use. The first clutch is then electronically disconnected at the same time as the second clutch is connected.<\/p>\n<p>The result is a consistent, fast and smooth gear change. Furthermore, since the two clutches transfer power from one gear to the next with minimal interruption in traction to the rear wheel, it minimizes any jerky shifting and bottoming of the bike, making shifting feel straightforward and smooth. Additional benefits include durability (as the frames cannot be damaged by missing a gear), no engine stalling, low stress urban riding, reduced rider fatigue and extra mental space to concentrate on purely riding aspects such as driving line, cornering, braking and acceleration points.<\/p>\n<p>The *DCT system offers two different driving approaches: the automatic adjustments, with pre-programmed shift patterns that constantly read the vehicle speed, selected gear and engine rpm to decide when to shift, and the Manual Transmission adjustment for gear changes using the taujana-type gauges on the left handlebar.<\/p>\n<p>Through the *TBW control, 5 automatic shift programs are available. Level 1 is the most relaxed, with upshifts and downshifts at relatively lower rpm; it is linked to the PLUJA driving style. Level 4, at the other extreme, shifts to higher rpm and also shifts uphill earlier to obtain a better engine braking effect; it is linked to the SPORT mode. Level 2 is linked to the STANDARD driving style, and Level 3 is between STANDARD and SPORTIUS.<\/p>\n<p>For the GRAVA driving style, the X-*ADV uses the relatively sporty &#8216;G&#8217; shift pattern; this has the additional functionality of a decreased level of &#8216;clunk&#8217; as the clutches operate from a fully open or fully locked throttle, which gives the driver a more direct feeling of traction on the rear wheel and the ability to perform controlled off-road clunks. While this functionality was previously activated by the separate G switch, it is now integrated into the new &#8216;G&#8217; shift pattern of the *DCT.<\/p>\n<p>The USER mode functionality allows the driver to select any of the *DCT shift patterns with preferred combinations of other parameters, such as power delivery, engine braking, ABS and *HSTC.<\/p>\n<h3>3.4 Design and Equipment<\/h3>\n<p>Styling *SUV esmolat, Honda&#8217;s intelligent Intelligent Phone Vehicle Control System offers intelligent phone linkage through the 5-color *TFT display Dual LED headlights include daytime running lights Large 22L storage space including a glove compartment and USB-USB charger.C The X-*ADV&#8217;s unique and crisp styling (conceived and developed by Honda&#8217;s R&amp;D team in Italy) will evolve by the year 21YM to become more sleek and streamlined; the silhouette is deliberately raised, with each panel of the bodywork perfected with a strong intent.<\/p>\n<p>The dual LED headlights have daytime running lights (*DRL) that automatically adjust to the intensity of ambient light and provide a bright, highly visible light that improves safety. All lighting systems are LED.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of ergonomics, the 820 mm seat height (shaped for easy access to the saddle) and wide handlebar set at 910 mm ensure a high viewpoint, providing excellent visibility. For daily riding or long trips, the X-*ADV&#8217;s screen adjusts smoothly through 5 positions from low to high to maximize or minimize airflow. The total height difference is 139 mm, with an 11\u00b0 tilt between the highest and lowest points.<\/p>\n<p>Incorporated into the X-*ADV&#8217;s driver interface and displayed through the 5-color *TFT display is the Honda Smart Phone Vehicle Control System (*HSVCs), which connects the driver to his or her smartphone while on the move and enables on-board management of phone calls, email, music and navigation. A headset is required, and the smart phone connects to the tachometer via Bluetooth; system management is also possible via the buttons on the left handlebar switch.<\/p>\n<p>Resistant plastic hand guards deflect wind and rain, while providing protection for hands and levers from rocks when driving off-road. A 2.5 mm thick aluminum plate with a 2.5 mm shot-blast finish protects the lower part.<\/p>\n<p>The storage space under the 22L seat can accommodate an integral helmet and is illuminated with an integral LED, the textured surface of which provides uniform illumination without any lighting. A USB-C charging dock is located at the rear of the compartment. A central cavallet, with tilt sensor, is installed as standard and allows the X-*ADV to be parked on a slope without the risk of tipping.<\/p>\n<p>For added convenience, the X-*ADV uses an Intelligent Key, which is stored in the rider&#8217;s pocket and eliminates the need to use a key for the ignition, fuel cap and seat. With the Intelligent Key present, one press of the main switch type *knob turns the ignition on and allows it to be rotated, which gives the driver control over the ignition\/steering block and, through two rocker switches, the fuel filler cap and seat. It also has a &#8216;feedback&#8217; function, which causes the turn signals to flash for remote identification, and locks and unlocks the optional *Almost Intelligent Top. A clutch mechanism in the main switch prevents the handlebars from being forcibly unlocked.<\/p>\n<p>The X-*ADV&#8217;s rear turn signals also have a self-canceling Emergency Stop Signal (*ESS) function. If a negative acceleration of 6.0 m\/s\u00b2 is detected at a minimum speed of 53 km\/h with any of the brakes in operation, the emergency flashing lights will flash to warn other road users that hard braking is in progress. At the same speed, the limit is reduced if ABS is activated at a negative acceleration of at least 2.5 m\/s\u00b2.<\/p>\n<p>The turn signals are also cancelled automatically. Instead of using a simple timer, the system compares the speed difference between the front and rear wheels and calculates when to cancel the indication depending on the situation.<\/p>\n<h3>3.5 Xassis<\/h3>\n<p>Lightweight diamond-shaped steel tubing frame 41 mm *USD front fork and Pro-Link swingarm Four-piston radial front and rear tires, 296 mm discs and ABS 120\/70 R17 and 160\/60 R15 front and rear tires The X-*ADV&#8217;s diamond-shaped steel tubing frame is light and strong, and its stiffness is designed to allow lateral stiffness for an intuitive feeling of control and longitudinal stiffness to handle vertical curves and to withstand the demands of changing direction.<\/p>\n<p>A 41 mm *USD front fork (which, in conjunction with the swingarm, uses rubber bearings instead of coilovers for smoother performance and more progressive suspension), provides 153.5 mm of travel. The Pro-Link rear shock absorber *monoshock has a 150 mm clearance and is connected to an aluminum swingarm that is 575 g lighter than the previous design.<\/p>\n<p>The front suspension is softer compared to the previous model and has a high-speed compression function to improve handling on rough roads.<\/p>\n<p>The braking system uses a dual-channel ABS braking system and two 296 mm floating discs at the front, which are covered by four-piston radial brake calipers; at the rear there is a 240 mm disc covered by a single-piston caliper.<\/p>\n<p>ABS is part of the braking system and works with a sensor in each wheel, and is also linked to the Honda Selectable Torque Control System (*HSTC) in the rear for precise intervention management and to ensure that ABS works across all three levels of *HSTC intervention. When stopped, the system allows the ABS in the rear wheel to be more sensitive to *HSTC intervention, so the driver benefits from straight-line braking even when on a steep slope. If the driver is left without braking pressure at the front or rear, the asymmetric braking of the ABS is activated and provides straight line braking. The soft start function of ABS also helps to control excessive braking.
