Braking is one of the essential aspects of a motorcycle, a section of special importance on which our physical integrity will depend, but which we often tend to neglect.<\/p>\n

The braking system, as a general rule and in most motorcycles, consists of:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Brake pump, located on the handlebars or on the right pedal<\/li>\n
  2. Hose, which may be metal or rubber<\/li>\n
  3. Brake calipers<\/li>\n
  4. Brake pads<\/li>\n
  5. Brake discs<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    A fluid (brake fluid) is responsible for making the brake calipers close when the brake pump is actuated, causing the brake pads to rub against the discs, stopping or slowing down the motorcycle.<\/p>\n

    All these elements are subjected to workloads and temperature changes that cause wear, so we must check them frequently to be sure that the motorcycle will brake when we need it.<\/p>\n

    When should we replace each element?<\/h2>\n
      \n
    1. Brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years at the latest, and it is recommended to replace it every year.<\/li>\n
    2. The calipers, the brake pump and the hose that connects the system are the elements of the set that have a superior durability, so it will be sufficient to perform a periodic visual inspection to ensure that there are no leaks and, in the case of the brake calipers, it will be important to clean them, at least every time we change the brake pads, to avoid that the pistons can be blocked.<\/li>\n
    3. Brake discs, as a consequence of the friction they suffer with the brake pads, wear out and lose thickness, but this is not the only reason why we should change them, since in certain circumstances they can be exposed to situations for which they have not been designed, becoming deformed because they have suffered an excess of temperature (for example, caused by inadequate brake pads).<\/li>\n
    4. Brake pads are the element that has more wear of the set, although the frequency with which we should change them will depend on different factors such as the type of motorcycle, the driving style or the compound of the pads, among others.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      How can we check the condition of the brake discs of our motorcycle?<\/h2>\n

      In the case of normal wear, we can check the thickness of the disc with a caliper gauge. The brake disc usually has an inscription indicating the service limit, so that if the thickness is less than that indicated, the discs must be replaced. <\/p>\n

      It may also be the case that the discs are within the indicated limits but when braking we feel a vibration, caused by a deformation of the discs.<\/p>\n

      It is recommended to change the brake pads every time the discs are changed.<\/p>\n

      How can we check the condition of the brake pads of our motorcycle?<\/h2>\n

      We can take advantage when we clean the bike or when we check the tire pressures, to keep an eye on the brake pads. Excessive use of brake pads can not only be dangerous but can also cause other breakdowns due to the friction of the metal support of the brake pads that is exposed when the friction compound runs out, affecting the brake discs. <\/p>\n

      To check them we only need to look through the back of the brake caliper and we will be able to see the amount of material remaining up to the metal bracket.<\/p>\n
