The transmission kit or secondary transmission consists of 3 elements that are responsible for transmitting the force that reaches the primary transmission from the engine to the rear wheel, so that the motorcycle can move.
The 3 components are:
- The pinion, which is located on the shaft coming out of the primary transmission (gearbox).
- The crown, which is located on the rear wheel
- The chain
These components are continuously exposed to a series of factors that cause wear, both due to contact with different external agents such as rainwater or dirt, as well as due to the stress and friction generated between them, which in turn causes them to be subjected to high temperatures.
For this reason, it is important to keep the chain in a good state of lubrication, so as to reduce the friction of these components against each other.
Even so, and although it is true that it will vary from one motorcycle to another, these components have a limited useful life, so we must check their condition from time to time.
In the case of the chain, we must pay attention to:
- That all links maintain their movement
- In case it contains O-rings (in charge of keeping the grease in its interior) that these are not breaking down
- Not excessively rusty
- That it has not reached the limit of its extension capacity – this can be determined by checking the reference indicator located on the swingarm, specifically on the tension adjustment screw.
Regarding the crown and pinion we will check that the teeth do not present deformities, breaks or excessive wear.
Generally, and except in very specific cases, it is recommended that, if we detect that one of these three elements needs to be replaced, we replace the complete set (hence the name transmission kit), since, as they work closely together, the bad wear of one of the components has negative effects on the other two. If only one of them is replaced, it could suffer premature wear.
