How can I know that I have to change the transmission kit of my bike?

The transmission kit or secondary transmission consists of 3 elements that are responsible for transmitting the power that reaches the primary transmission from the engine to the rear wheel, so that the bike can move.

The 3 components are:
– The pinion, which is located in the axle that comes out of the primary transmission (the gearbox)
– The crown, which we find in the front wheel
– The chain

These components are continuously exposed to a series of factors that cause wear, both through contact with different external agents such as rain water or brutality, as well as through the stress and friction generated between them, which in turn causes them to be subjected to high temperatures.

It is for this reason that it is important to keep the chain in a good state of lubrication, in order to reduce the friction between these components.

Even so, and although it is true that it will vary from one bike to another, these components have a limited useful life, so we have to check their condition from time to time.

In the case of the chain, we must pay attention to:
1. That all the links maintain their movement
2. In the case of a chain containing key joints (responsible for maintaining the grease inside the chain), that these joints are not being braided
3. That it is not excessively rusted
4. That it has not reached the limit of its extension capacity – we can know this by checking the reference indicator found on the swingarm, specifically on the tension adjustment knob.

Regarding the crown and the pinion, we will check that the teeth do not present deformities, braiding or excessive wear.

Generally, and except in very specific cases, it is recommended that, if we detect that one of these three elements needs to be replaced, we replace the complete set (hence the name transmission kit), since when working closely, the bad wear of one of the components has negative effects on the other two. If we only replace one of them, it could suffer premature wear.
