How to circulate in a group?

There are many ways to enjoy the motorcycle, we can do it alone, with a companion or in groups, more or less large. All options are good but each one will require a series of skills and precautions so that we can enjoy safely.

We must always keep in mind that the public road belongs to everyone, and that we must respect the other occupants, as well as not let our guard down: motorcyclists are invisible to other vehicles, and also more vulnerable. For this reason, we should always be wary and try to anticipate any possible risk situation that may arise.

In addition, when riding in a group:

  1. On interchanges, fast roads or leaving the city, we can compact the group by riding in a zig-zag pattern, i.e., we will not be positioned just behind the motorcycle in front of us, but we will ride diagonally. In this way we gain a reaction margin in case we have to brake, we will have greater visibility and, in turn, we will be more visible.
  2. In the same way, when overtaking other vehicles, we can move to the right side of the lane, and thus leave space to facilitate the incorporation of the motorcycle coming behind us.
  3. In narrower sections, two-way roads where lanes are not delimited and twisty sections, we will ride in line and always respecting the safety distance with the motorcycle in front of us.
  4. If the group is very large, it is recommended to divide into smaller groups and regroup, for example, at breakfast or lunch time.
  5. We must always respect the rules of the road and signal maneuvers well in advance, so that the person behind us knows what our next move will be. It is also important to keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
  6. The theory says that the slowest should go to the front of the group, but this is something that is not usually put into practice in real life. In any case, it is best to have an experienced and responsive person close the group.
  7. To avoid anyone getting lost we will always wait for the person who was right behind us. This will also allow us to react more quickly in case someone might have a problem.
  8. It is also a good option to have a whatsapp group with everyone’s location to facilitate regrouping in case the group gets separated.
  9. Even if we know the area well, it is important not to be overconfident and, under no circumstances, ride beyond our capabilities or try to force our pace in order to follow the group.
  10. Knowing the biker signal code will facilitate communication, especially if you do not have an intercom.
